With the rise of the “the internet of things” everything is becoming smarter and smarter that includes our watches. Recently, the trend for smart watches has been through the roof. Start initially by Samsung “Gear”, now each mobile vendor is looking to bring out their own watch. So, Asus too has taken the initiative of making their own Android wear.
Asus’s upcoming product is named the Asus ZenWatch. It was made official during the 2014 IFA conference. Asus had teased the watch prior to its announcement and managed to create the hype they wanted. At IFA, they also announced two new laptops and a tablet along with the watch. However, they have not named prices for any product yet.
The watch itself is a squared display with curved corners. It features a 2.5” Corning Gorilla Glass 3. The strap, brown in colour, is made from leather and has a quick release mechanism. Overall, the watch feels and looks nice, it is elegant and does not feel cheap in anyway. Asus has boasted the ability to change watch face on will of the user, with a total of over 100 to choose from.
The watch runs Android with the ZenUI from ASUS and is compatible with any Android phone running Android 4.3 or higher. The watch can perform all the functions of a watch as well as a fitness tracker. This includes keeping track of steps taken, heart rate and etc. Asus has also boasted some additional features in the ZenWatch which include smarter unlocking, cover to mute, tap tap, and find my phone as well as controls for presentations. It is worth mentioning that when used with the Asus ZenUI Phone, the watch bring addition features like What’s Next and Do It Later.
Coming down to specifications, the display itself is a 1.63”AMOLED display with a resolution of 320×320, the pixel density for this display then becomes 278ppi which is equal to that of any good smartphone. The processor is a 1.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 400 along with 512 MB of RAM, a 1.4Wh battery and 4GB of internal memory. While for connectivity it hosts Bluetooth 4.0 and a micro-USB port. The total weight of the watch is about 75 grams.
So after IFA 2014, the smart watch business is getting bigger with a new one from Sony as well as one form LG. It will be anticipating to see which fairs best and what price each one costs.
