Slice Ice – Games Review
King Penguin isn’t very happy. The ice in his ice-chilled drink has melted and his drink is not as chilly as he would have liked. He ordered you get him more ice and you are only too happy to oblige your king’s demand. However, to your dismay, the other penguins are playing on the ice. You’ll have to think of a way to get enough ice without harming the playing penguins!
To help the King Penguin in Slice Ice, you will need to know how the controls work… and thankfully, the controls are very simple. To collect the ice needed, you just need to slice the ice with your finger! Slices must be clean-cuts, meaning that your slices must be a through and through. Furthermore, slicing is a linear motion, so you are not allowed to twist or turn your slices around while cutting. As you slice and collect the ice, the glass on the bottom left corner of the screen will fill up with ice. Once it is full, you’ll win the game!
This may sound easy and all, but the main challenge here is to not accidentally harm the penguins sliding around on the ice. Not to mention, if there are more than 1 penguin on the ice, you will need to slice the ice so that the penguins will be able to stay together on the same piece of ice in the end. To be great in this game, you’ll have to time the movement of the penguins accurately so you can fulfil both aforementioned criteria. If not, you may just end up separating the penguins… or worse!
In addition, in Slice Ice, there are generally 3 game modes, namely easy fun, daytime fun and sunset (which is only unlocked if you reached World 4 on Daytime mode), each containing several “worlds” for you to play in. Each world is further consisted of plenty of levels that you’ll need to get through in order to unlock the next world. These game modes are actually not very different – the rules of the game are the same and so does the gameplay. The puzzles are different though.
Each level also has up to 3 stars for you to earn and how many stars you’ll get depends on your slice count – how many slices you have to do to get enough ice to fill the glass. At the end of every level, you will even earn some coins depending on how well you did. These coins can then be used to purchase power-ups at the shop.
Can’t find the shop? Well, you can access it by tapping on the amount of coins you have at the top right corner of the screen. There are mainly 4 different types of power-ups that you can buy, such as Slowdown, which obviously slows down the moving penguins, and Shrink Em whereby every penguin will turn into baby penguins that will make you go “Awww… they are so adorable!”
There is also Freeze power-up which stops the penguins from moving and the best power-up – “Look! A fish!” that allows you to place a fish on a spot on the ice to attract the penguins to move to the area you want them to be. These power-ups are all level-locked, so you’ll need to reach a certain world before you can buy them.
In a nutshell, Slice Ice is a rather unique and challenging (particularly if you’re aiming for 3 stars all the way) puzzle game that will definitely get those rusty cogs in your brain working. Try it now!
